What are some of your fondest memories of that fabulous local rock scene of the late 60's?

I am overwhelmed by memories of those days. Hard to believe that so many years have passed. Maybe I'll be able to pin down a few memories and post them.
best to all

I went to WMU and was a friend of Jill Feldman. I hung out at "the guys" house in Kzoo all the time. In fact, I skipped many classes to hang out. Those were the best days. One weekend Dick, Fred, Danny and Jill came to my house in Fenton.....Parents were away, of course. Such good times.....

I remember piling into the car with three or four other girls and driving to Saugatuck or Benton Harbor to listen to the "boys" and the bands. We had so much freedom then...our folks allowed us to take off and dance, dance, dance! It was a great time!

Deb,
Long time no contact. I see Laura often, which is sort of ironic since I never knew her in school. She comes to the high school games and I cover them for the Tribune.

As a kid we used to hang out next door to where Greg (Chic) Erickson lived. I can still remember him practicing the flute solo from Wild Thing over and over... and over 'n over 'n over... You guys were all like rock Gods to us whippersnappers...

Even though I was too young at the time to get into the shows, I remember Pure Smack, Corner Store, The Mussies and new who most of the band members were because of my brother Gary who was in a few of these bands. I remember walking over to the S.H. Armory with a friend and taking turns boosting each other up on our shoulders so we could look through the windows to watch the show.
The Music....it was an awesome era.

The best was the beer and wine hunt before going to the dance, where ever the dance was to be. Kind of a ritual,
find booze, get twisted, go to the dance and then go to Elliot' BBQ after the dance prior to going home.

Of course I remember many of the the dances of that time. The one that sticks out is, trying to cram all our friends into one of the store fronts below the Nichols Hotel to hear the band.

hey now! don't remember if it was as a 12 yr old kid sneaking into noah's ark, i do remember when it was the green door previous to that- in the green door era, i heard gary singing sunshine superman inside while a bunch of college kids partying in the street chanted "cops eat shit" and threw beer bottles at the state police riot squad, or the high school dances ( when they played 3/5's of a mile in 10 seconds, you KNEW your were tapped into a high voltage line )with corner store- but what brought me back to the reunion would be the smack lineup with charles and byron and fred and dick. talk about high voltage!! the last gig at the armory, when someone else local opened and rather than take a break between acts, the tune "hey jude" was started and brady, gary et. al. sneeked in and started to sing-- i'm tellin you,by the final chorus ' na na na na-' i thought the floor of that old armory was goin down- it just went straight up from there . how about the second to last show at the shadowland ballroom? gary crowd surfing before crowd surfing was a deal.
but the MUSIC. that is what it was that stuck fresh in my mind for 39 years till last night, the MUSIC. the only thing that came close in intensity to a pure smack show was perhaps 3 out of 40 odd grateful dead shows i attended in the 80's before the dragon kicked jerry's butt.
thank you so much for the effort and the music. pure smack was one of those one in a million confluences when the holy god of goof lined up all the tumblers just so and the synchro-mesh synchronicity gears of the GOD's lined up and we ALL got lucky!!!

respectfully,

tom edgcomb

I am proud to say I was way too young to have experienced these bands but heard them and about them all my life. They are a big part of South Haven's history. I wish I could have been there for the reunion of the bands. I heard it was amazing, not to mention MY brother in-law Timm Gildea. Makes me home sick...
